Selling Your Property…

bulletComplimentary Evaluations of Your Items

Brookfield Auction can usually provide free consultations to evaluate your antiques and other items. Please call or email us to schedule an appointment. We handle items on consignment or will purchase antiques outright, giving our clients the option of immediate payment.

bulletMeeting Our Client’s Needs

Whether you’re looking to sell some antiques, liquidate the estate of a loved one, downsizing, redecorating or whatever, you have options in how to accomplish that goal.  You must research and consider those options and decide which venue best meets your needs.  There may be ‘upsides’ and ‘downsides’ to any of the choices available to you for selling your property.

Our auctions provide potential buyers with an online catalog complete with descriptions and extensive photographs of each item offered for sale.  The online catalog is linked from top antique advertising platforms nationwide.  Selling through auction provides sellers with a competitive environment in which to sell their property.  Sellers do not need to wonder if an offer they accepted was too low; instead, competitive bidding through auction can lead to a much higher selling price than expected.  At your home, dealers will only offer what they want to pay.  At auction, dealers will pay what they have to pay to purchase the item.

Brookfield Auction offers full service property and estate liquidation. We can consign or purchase single items, or liquidate an entire estate, leaving the premises ‘broom clean’.  As part of a contract to buy antiques from you or sell them for you we can provide additional services to meet all your needs.  We can donate household items for you…in your name…so that you can receive a tax deduction on those items.  We have the capacity and experience to conduct an on-site auction, when appropriate or to run an estate sale for you.  Perhaps the best thing on lesser items and household goods is to load up a box truck and ‘blow it out’ at a flea market.  Our combination of services results in the sale of your various properties using the best venue for each category, unlike estate sales.

bullet Consignment

We accept quality consignments of 18-19th C. antiques including furniture & decorations, original art, select prints and engravings, sculpture, silver, jewelry, bronzes, rugs, textiles, porcelain & pottery, crystal, chandeliers & sconces, collections, Mid 20th C. Modern, quality previously owned furniture, decorative items, curious & interesting pieces and more!

Commission Rates per Lot

The higher the ‘hammer’ price, the lower the commission rate!
  • 10% for lots selling over $7,001
  • 15% for lots selling from $2,001 – $7,000
  • 20% for lots selling from $251 – $2,000
  • 25% for lots selling from $51 – $250
  • 40% for lots selling up to $50
There is a $10 minimum commission, per lot, sold or unsold.
Generally, unless agreed to in writing at the signing of your contract, there are no additional charges. Insurance, photography, web hosting and advertising are all included in the commission rates. Packing and pick-up of your items is not included in the commission. A nominal charge will be added to your consignment contract and deducted from your auction proceeds for this service. As an alternative, consignors may arrange to bring their items to us.

bullet Outright Purchase

Brookfield Auction offers outright purchase of antiques, giving our clients the option of immediate payment.  We purchase single items or the entire contents of estates. Brookfield Auction can also include clean-out services as part of the transaction.

bullet Service, Marketing & Advertising

Hundreds of featured items are photographed and placed on top websites including Auction Zip, Auction Flex and Brookfield Auction’s own site. These sites are the biggest online platforms antique buyers use to search for upcoming auctions and the antiques that will be offered. These sites reach affluent retail buyers, dealers and collectors, both nationwide and internationally. For those who have not warmed up to the computer age, we advertise in the Antiques and the Arts Weekly, Antique Trader and 30 local papers. These antique and auction advertising giants have an established presence on the world wide web. They place our ads on their sites with links to our website, further directing buyers to the auction.

For buyers whom we already know, we send thousands of direct four-color mailings and thousands of email notifications about the upcoming auction. Bidders who cannot attend the preview period may request additional photographs and condition reports. Buyers may attend the auction or bid with confidence through absentee or phone bidding.

bulletAuction Preview

Several days prior to the auction, all items which are to be sold are trucked to the Litchfield Firehouse’s spacious event hall and set up in room settings for the formal preview period.  The preview period runs for two days prior to the auction.  During this time, buyers are welcome to browse and inspect the items they are interested in bidding on.  Our staff is available to answer any questions about the bidding process (in-house or absentee), the merchandise, payment, delivery, shipping or pick-up.  The atmosphere of the preview is relaxed and social in contrast with the speed and excitement of the live auction.

bulletAfter the Auction

Consignors are welcome to attend the auction! Please note — consignors are prohibited from bidding on their own merchandise (or inducing someone else to bid). Consignors are phoned the Wednesday following each auction to review their auction results. Generally, within 15 business days of the auction, they are mailed an itemized reconciliation of their items along with payment by check.
